Police uncertain whether Lockport canal death was suicide

LOCKPORT – A 46-year-old man apparently drowned Tuesday night in the Erie Canal in Lockport.

There were conflicting versions of the circumstances surrounding the death of Daniel M. Rauber, a Lockport resident of no fixed address, Police Chief Michael F. Niethe said. His body was recovered from the canal near the Stevens Street Bridge shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, about an hour after police received reports of a man in the water.

“We’re not sure it’s a suicide by any means,” Niethe said. “There’s conflicting stories as to whether he jumped off the Stevens Street Bridge or entered the canal from the docks behind Reid Petroleum.”

Niethe said there’s a possibility the death was an accident resulting from Rauber simply wanting to take a swim in the canal. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
