BATAVIA – Batavia Police warned Tuesday of an IRS telephone scam involving the collection of overdue tax payments.
The scammers claim they can prevent an IRS arrest if the tax payment is transferred within an hour to a specific bank account, police said. Batavia officials were made aware of the scam by a New York City resident who received several calls, police added.
Batavia Police are advising people receiving the call to hang up immediately, call 1-800-366-4484 or visit the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov and access the FTC Complaint Assistance site.
Anyone who owes back taxes or thinks they own back taxes can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 for assistance, police added.
