Healthy choices: Top events this week include start of another month of free outdoor fitness

Another month of free outdoor fitness classes starts today across the region. Those, a Buffalo Slow Roll Monday evening and a free drug drop-off disposal program Tuesday lead the WNY Refresh Top 10 (and more) calendar Picks of the Week.


Hope After Heartache – Tools for Living with Loss: 4 p.m., St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church, 157 Cleveland Drive, Cheektowaga; also at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Mount Olivet Cemetery, 4000 Elmwood Ave., Kenmore. For info, call 873-6500.

Slow Roll: Riders gather at 5:30 p.m. and ride starts at 6:30 sharp outside Hydraulic Hearth, 716 Swan St. Bikers up to age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, visit

Yoga: 5:30 p.m., Larkin Square pickleball courts, 745 Seneca St.; also 6 p.m., Westwood Park, 175 Pavement Road, Lancaster. Both classes are free and open to all as part of Independent Health’s Fitness in the Parks program.


Outdoor Fitness Fun: Last week, geared toward 4- and 5-year-olds, 9:15 to 10 a.m., as well as same time Thursday, Veterans Park, 1717 Bedell Road, Grand Island.  Fitness, games and more at Miracle Field in the park. Also for the last week, Family Total Fitness, for ages 10 and up, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Veterans Park. Pilates, yoga and strength training. All programs are free.

Free drug drop-off disposal: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Erie County Emergency Services Training and Operations Center, 3359 Broadway, Cheektowaga. Unneeded prescription drugs and any over-the-counter medications will be accepted no questions asked. A list of permanent medication disposal sites can be found at

Niagara County Community Health Meeting: 9 a.m., Public Safety Training Facility, 5574 Niagara St. Extension, Lockport. The county Health Assessment Workgroup, comprised of health department, county hospital and P2 Collaborative staff, will outline priorities being discussed for new state health and wellness priorities in the county.
