Jay Malkowski’s two-run double highlighted a five-run sixth-inning rally that carried Leibs of Buffalo to an 8-5 victory over the Boston BASE Astros in the championship game of the AAABA Altoona Regional Sunday.
Two victories over the Astros were needed to send Leibs on to the AAABA Nationals which will begin Monday in Johnstown, Pa. Leibs will face the Chicago Metro champion at 11 a.m. in the first round of pool play in the 16-team nationals.
Sunday, Leibs had to first finish a 4-1 victory over Boston that was suspended from Saturday because of rain. Bryce Donovan went 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead that win which was completed on a artificial turf in nearby Windber, Pa. Mike Colosi got the win and Tyler Howard the save.
In the final, Ryan McCarrick went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, Brendan Kaplewicz scored four times, Brandon Nicholson had three hits and Alex Whipple drove in two runs. Jose Alamany was the winning pitcher.
