An 18-year-old Buffalo man was facing a slew of charges after he allegedly sped off during a traffic stop early Friday morning, crashed his car, then, according to Buffalo police, tried to ditch a loaded handgun.
Police said Maurice Rice was pulled over by Ferry-Fillmore district police at Peckham and Watson streets shortly before 1 a.m. Friday.
Then, Rice allegedly “took off at a high rate of speed,” driving down several streets before crashing his vehicle at William and Bennett streets, police said.
Rice got out of the vehicle and “discarded a loaded handgun” before he was arrested following a short foot chase, according to a police statement.
Rice was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, fleeing from an officer, imprudent speed and other charges. Police said they have recovered the weapon.
