Common Council President Darius Pridgen, pastor of True Bethel Baptist Church, learned the hard way this week that there are times to preach and times to be silent.
On the first night of the Democratic National Convention, he said, he sat next to a man who politely inquired why he was supporting Hillary Clinton.
“I went on for 45 minutes like a Baptist minister preaching the Bible,” Pridgen said. “He sat there like a parishioner at a Catholic Church.”
Then after the gavel came down, the same man pulled a homemade sign out of his back pocket that read, “I’m feeling the Bern.”
“He never talked to me for the rest of the night,” Pridgen said, laughing.
Pridgen moved his seat and never again assumed that everyone in the convention hall was a Clinton supporter.
“What I learned for the rest of the convention was, look at the buttons and keep your mouth closed,” he said.
