The every week, or every other debate
Lots of talk yesterday about a new city recycling contract.
The question was whether to stick with once-a-week pick-up, or save up to $3.5 million over the life of the five-year contract by switching to every other week pick-up.
Allied Waste Services argued for alternate week pick-ups. The city would save money, and could expect to pick up as much recycling as it now does.
But Council members agreed with the city's Public Works Department that reducing pick-ups could jeopardize the city's ongoing attempt to increase residential participation in recycling.
So the city is keeping weekly pick-up for the next five years, with Modern Recycling getting the $2.8 million annual contract - about $700,000 more annually than Allied would charge for every other week pick-up.
Allen St. Hardware update
A vote on the Allen St. Hardware dance permit probably won't be held until September.
Before that happens, says Fillmore Councilman Dave Franczyk, he'll be taking a tour of the building, where construction work is ongoing as part of the new dance floor plan, the councilman said.
