SHERMAN – A Bronx couple was remanded to the Chautauqua County Jail without bail Sunday after allegedly trying to flee from State Police with three young children in their vehicle.
Robert Lajara, 32, and Gloria Rodriguez, 33, reportedly changed seats after their car, allegedly driven by Lajara, was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 86. During questioning, Lajara got out of the vehicle and fled and Rodriguez drove off toward Ellery, picking up Lajara on the way and driving at up to 110 mph in an unsuccessful attempted to outrun police.
After the vehicle was stopped in Ellery, Rodriguez and Lajara were arrested and the three children, all under the age of 16, were turned over to Chautauqua County Child Protective Services.
Rodriguez was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and endangering the welfare of a child. Lajara was charged with resisting arrest and child endangerment.
