There are approximately 503 registered sex offenders in Niagara County, and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to know where every one of them is living.
The “Summer Safety Campaign” is shining a spotlight on sex offenders.
Citizens are encouraged to take advantage of the department’s mapping and alert system at www.NiagaraSheriff.com.
The system pinpoints where an offender lives and allows residents to confidentially sign up for automatic email alerts that are sent out if an offender moves within a specified radius of a registered address.
Residents can thereby monitor important addresses, such as their home and those of their babysitter, friends and grandparents, noted Sheriff James R. Voutour.
The alerts are sent out in real time as soon as a sex offender registers with the sheriff’s office.
In addition to alerts and mapping, the sheriff’s website also offers safety tips so residents can have a safe summer.
“Knowledge is power and knowing where the sex offenders reside in your area can help you make the best choice for safe and enjoyable summer activities,” Voutour said.
