A pair of local amateur baseball teams coached by Ron Leib won league titles on Saturday to qualify for regional competition.
In the afternoon, McKeever Post earned its first-ever trip to the state American Legion tournament with a 9-3 win over West Seneca, the defending state champion. Kaleb Lee pitched eight strong innings to get the win. McKeever had lost the first game of the best-of-three series on Friday, but bounced back with a 16-3 win earlier on Saturday to set up the title matchup. Zack Mitchell had multiple hits in both of Saturday’s games.
Then on Saturday night, Leib’s beat Ken-Hy, 9-5, to take the AAABA title. Ryan McCarrick and Kevin Koziol drove in a pair of runs each for the winners.
The American Legion team heads to Utica for the state tournament on Monday. The AAABA squad will play in a regional tournament in Altoona, Pa., on Wednesday.
