A water-main break in Amherst has closed a portion of North Forest Road.
“There’s a break in that area that’s undermining a lot of the road,” said Amherst Highway Superintendent Patrick G. Lucey.
North Forest Road will be closed between Sheridan Drive and Indian Trail Road at least until the afternoon, Lucey said.
Crews on scene are preparing to begin repairs and there is no formal time frame for completion, said Sean Dwyer, spokesman for the Erie County Water Authority.
But the repair should be completed within the next few hours, Dwyer said shortly before noon.
Lucey described the scene as an “open depression that’s at least 10 feet deep full of water.”
North Forest is maintained by Erie County and the water line is maintained and operated by the water authority, but the pipe itself is owned by the Town of Amherst. Should pipe replacement be required, the town would be responsible to cover those costs, Dwyer said.
The break is on a smaller line and “nowhere near the extent” of Wednesday’s break that’s caused a boil-water advisory for nearly a quarter-million people, Lucey said.
