LOCKPORT – The Flight of Five, Lockport’s partially restored 19th century Erie Canal locks, which normally are open only on Saturdays, will be open the next three Mondays to gauge visitor response.
David R. Kinyon, president of the city agency that operates the locks, said the Monday hours this coming week and Aug. 1 and 8, are an experiment.
He said past data from the Erie Canal Discovery Center shows that Lockport draws many of its visitors from people stopping on the way to or from a weekend in Niagara Falls, so a Monday opening might lure them.
The lock demonstrations, in which teams of volunteers open the lock gates to fill the locks with water that moves a replica canal boat up and down the Flight, are available from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays through Oct. 1. The Monday demonstrations also will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.
