Amherst police have fielded nearly 50 complaints from residents about an IRS scam, the department posted on its Facebook page.
The residents all described phone calls from a person claiming to be from the U.S. Treasury demanding payment for back taxes. The scam artist then threatens the resident with arrest if the taxes are not paid.
Police believe the phone calls to be consistent with scams that have been recently reported in Lancaster and other suburbs.
The U.S. Treasury will not contact via telephone regarding fines or penalties, police warned. You should not give out any personal information including banking data, police said. And terminate the call immediately.
