Hamburg’s Gugino, once a backer of Cruz for president, is no longer a fan

CLEVELAND – The Hamburg man who led Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign in Western New York is no longer a fan.

Russ Gugino, who organized a series of upstate events for Cruz before the April presidential primary, said the former candidate’s failure to endorse Donald Trump during a speech before the Republican National Convention was “classless, shameful and the height of ungraciousness.”

“He has seriously misjudged the impact he thought he would get,” Gugino told The Buffalo News late Wednesday. “It was self-serving to the point that it was sick. He should be ashamed of himself.”

Gugino, a veteran of several local political campaigns, said he remains “hugely disappointed” in Cruz’s speech.

“Not only was I appalled, I thought it was the height of ungraciousness,” he said. “I was happy to serve him because of his principled conservatism, but he has shown a different side that is unbecoming of a presidential candidate now or in the future.”
