A sergeant and three correctional officers were injured at Wende Correctional Facility last week when they were attacked by an inmate they were attempting to transfer to another infirmary in the prison, the state Correctional Officers PBA announced Monday.
The most seriously injured, the sergeant, was treated at Erie County Medical Center for his injuries, including an ear laceration, elbow abrasions and shoulder, hip and knee pain, the union said. The three officers sought outside medical treatment for their injuries.
The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. Wednesday when the 57-year-old inmate being transferred was ordered to turn around so he could be handcuffed, the PBA stated. Instead, he turned around and struck the sergeant in the right eye and cheekbone. An ensuing battle included the sergeant striking the inmate with his baton, before the inmate tried to attack the officers with a piece of the broken baton.
The inmate, serving a 30-year-to-life sentence on murder and other convictions, was transferred after the attack to Attica Correctional Facility and placed in a special housing unit.
