Chelsea Dantonio and Julie Murphy each finished in the top five of their respective divisions at the New York State Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships on Friday at Elmira Country Club in Elmira.
Dantonio, the former Lancaster standout and five-time Section VI champion who just completed her freshman season at at Winthrop University in South Carolina, placed fifth overall with a three-round total of 16-over 235. She finished Friday with a round of three-over 76. Dantonio finished 10 shots behind the winner, Bailey Coccoa of Latham – who closed with a round of 1-over 74 and won the title in a playoff.
Coccoa parred the first hole of sudden death to get the win over second-round leader Marianna Monaco.
Murphy of Amherst, the softball coach at Williamsville South, placed third among Mid-Amateur competitors, finishing with three-round total of 243, four shots behind winner Joanna Beatty of Newburgh.
