Lockport man goes to prison for cocaine possession

LOCKPORT – A City of Lockport man was sentenced Wednesday to 18 months in state prison plus a year of post-release supervision for having 11.83 grams of cocaine when police raided his girlfriend’s Gabriel Drive apartment on Jan. 15.

Willie B. Sanders, 27, of North Transit Street, was sentenced by Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon for attempted fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Assistant Public Defender Michael E. Benedict said Sanders was selling drugs to support his marijuana use. He has fathered five children, ages 2 to 9, with four different women.

Sanders’ legal problems aren’t over. On April 15, the day after he pleaded guilty in the drug case, he was arrested by Lockport police as a passenger in the getaway car used in a gunpoint robbery of a man on Harvey Avenue in Lockport. Two other men have pleaded guilty in that case.
