Letter: Taking away our gun rights will not stop the shootings

Taking away our gun rights will not stop the shootings

Every year thousands of people are killed or injured by automobiles in our country. Do you ever hear the president, or the Department of Justice or anyone else for that matter say the reason for all these deaths and injuries is because we have too many automobiles in our country?

Do you ever hear these people saying that the only reason that a vehicle would have over 100 horsepower is just to speed and cause injury and death to others and their sale should be banned?

Do you hear them say that a sporty looking car looks scary and is just for breaking the speed laws and their sale should be banned? Do you hear them say that Congress should enact laws that keep people from owning automobiles?

No, you never, ever hear anything like that because the problems are rightly attributed to drinking and driving, irresponsible driving and at times someone with a mental condition, etc. They address the problems by adding more “safety checks,” more speed traps and more officers on patrol.

The solution is to address the bad actors who abuse the freedoms that are spelled out in our Constitution, not to take away the freedoms of the law abiding. And the last time I read the Constitution, I didn’t see the word “automobile” once.
