Batavia firefighters respond to smoke-filled apartment, find dead cat inside oven

BATAVIA – A smoke alarm going off at an East Main Street apartment drew firefighters to a horrifying discovery Monday night – a dead cat in an oven, Batavia police reported Tuesday.

Batavia firefighters were dispatched to the home at 400 E. Main St. Inside, they found the apartment filled with light smoke.

“Further investigation revealed the cause of the smoke to be a deceased cat, located in the oven,” a statement from Batavia police said.

A resident at the apartment, Darren Annovi, 42, was subsequently charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.

He was arraigned in Batavia City Court and was being held without bail. He was scheduled to appear in court again at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Batavia police said they are working closely with the management of the Batavia Housing Authority on the case.
