State honors WNY's diamond gems

The Coaches All-Western New York baseball package ran last week, but the New York State Sportswriters just recently unveiled its all-state list.

The locals honored include outfielder Leugim ‘LG’ Castillo of Lancaster, who earned first team All-State in Class AA. In the same class, Orchard Park pitcher Ben Wereski received second-team honors.

Others earning first team honors in the other four classifications include Williamsville East shortstop Charlie Mack (Class A), Fredonia pitcher Jarod Burmaster (Class B), Frewsburg infielder Kole Brink (Class C) and North Collins infielder Jonathan Wilson (Class D). Other second-team selections include Starpoint catcher Matt Cross (Class A), East Aurora infielder Noah Thompson (Class B), Silver Creek outfielder Brad Rybak (Class C) and North Collins pitcher Brandon Zielinski (Class D).

It should be noted that players from Catholic and private schools that are not part of the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association, i.e. the Monsignor Martin, downstate Catholic High School Athletic Association and Long Island, were grouped together on one separate team divided by league affiliation. Those receiving all-state honors from the Monsignor Martin Association include Prep Talk Player of the Year and San Diego Padres pitching prospect Dan Dallas of Canisius along with teammate and outfielder Zach Mitchell, St. Joe’s pitcher Will Frank along infielder Anthony Brophy and St. Francis outfielder Jacob Victor.

Here is the complete list of players honored by the state. It should be noted that the larger classes went as many as 10-teams deep (with 11 players honored on each team) while Class D only honored a total of 44 kids on its four all-star teams.
