For those who found small joy in the sight of Barry Meadows dancing at a busy corner in Lackawanna, his death prompted a call to remember him in a special way.
By Saturday afternoon, a few days after his death July 6 from cancer, nearly 900 people had signed a petition to rename the intersection of South Park Avenue and Ridge Road to Barry Meadows Way.
That’s where the man fondly known as “Mr Hollywood” danced, waved and sang to the delight of many passersby and residents no matter the season and at all times of day.
“He was an icon,” said Alicia Myers of Lackawanna, who started the petition on the Change.org website.
“Something should be at that spot so that when you pass by, you feel Barry’s presence,” she said. “It’s hurting that he is not there. Seeing him out there always put a smile on your face.”
Among the comments on the petition:
“Barry was not only a smiling face when I came home, but he’s the face of everything I love and cherish in Lackawanna”
“Barry was a staple of the community. And proof that the simple joy, of bringing others joy, is reward enough.”
“He was a crazy free spirit and he was loved for that.”
Myers, who started the petition on Friday, plans to collect 1,000 signatures and then make an appeal to the City of Lackawanna.
