The Sabres are going to use many tactics in their recruiting pitch to Jimmy Vesey. Kyle Okposo revealed the simplest one of all.
Tell Vesey the Sabres are going to win.
Okposo, officially introduced Thursday in Buffalo, sees good things ahead for his new organization and hopes Vesey sees it, too.
"I would tell him that we’re going to be a good team for a long time, and it’s going to be a fun organization to play in," Okposo said in First Niagara Center. "When you have the Pegulas at the helm, it’s going to be a great organization. We’re going to be contenders. That’s something that isn’t always there on teams. I know that personally. We went through a really tough stretch with the Island.
"There’s not going to be those rough times ahead. We’re going to be good."
Okposo, who signed a seven-year, $42 million contract Friday, reiterated how excited he is to join the Sabres after nine seasons with the New York Islanders.
"There's so much skill, and the future is bright," the 28-year-old said. "I really believe that we can win here, and that's what sold me. That's why you play the game. You play the game to win a Stanley Cup, to win a championship, to raise banners. I think this team has the ability to do that."
Okposo donned his new Sabres sweater with the No. 21. One of his best friends is Drew Stafford, who wore the same number during his time with Buffalo.
"I told him I'd take it down from the rafters for him," Okposo said with a smile.
