Meet Sabres prospect Devante Stephens

Current Team: Kelowna Rockets (WHL)

Position: Defense

Age: 19

Height: 6-foot-1

Weight: 176 lbs.

Stats: Two goals, 11 points in 72 CHL games

Drafted: 5th round (122nd overall) in the 2015 draft by Buffalo

Sabres Connection: Stephens is used to coach Dan Lambert, who is running Development Camp this week. Stephens played under Lambert two years ago, when the current Rochester Americans head coach was the bench boss for the Rockets.

"I haven't seen him for a while," Stephens said. "It's good just to see his face again, just to kind of get some pointers from him again."

Stephens said his familiarity with Lambert might give him a bit of an advantage during this week.

"I kind of know how he likes things run, how he likes practices, what he likes to see and stuff like that," Stephens said. "I just go out there and try to do that."

How would you describe your game?

"I'm a defensive defenseman. I'm kind of stay-at-home, but I can skate real well. When I use my speed I can sometimes jump up in the play. I'm a physical d-man. I like taking the body and playing hard."

What player do you model your game after?

"I kind of like how Dustin Byfuglien plays. Obviously the guy is unique. No one can really play like him, but I just like the grit to his game and how he can jump up in the play too and use his offensive skill."

What is your greatest hockey accomplishment?

"I'd have to say winning the WHL Championship. That was probably one of the highlights of my career. As a whole team and a group, that gave us memories for life."

What are your goals for this season?

"Definitely to come back to my WHL team and be one of the top d-men and be relied on. Obviously, I would like to get some power play time on the No. 1 PP. ... It's going to be my third year, so I'm just trying to get out there and prove as much as I can so I can make that jump to the next level."

Why do you wear No. 21?

"No specific reason. They kind of just gave it to me when I came to Kelowna. It kind of stuck."

What’s something you like to do off the ice?

"I like playing basketball with my buddies on the court. I also sometimes go out to the beach and hang out there. I like playing video games with my buddies, like NHL, and I do like watching hockey games too."
