Mercy Hospital’s project to expand cardiac OR goes to Buffalo Planning Board

A proposed $14.8 million expansion and renovation of Mercy Hospital’s cardiac operating room suite is on the agenda of Monday’s Buffalo Planning Board meeting.

Catholic Health is planning to build a 10,000-square-foot addition for a third operating room for heart procedures at Mercy Hospital, 565 Abbott Road, because growth is taxing the capacity of its two existing cardiac operating rooms, the hospital said in its filing with the state Health Department. The project totals 21,589 square feet of new and renovated space, including added storage space, and requires relocation of an existing loading dock.

The Health Department on Friday notified Catholic Health that it had approved the project, with several routine contingencies.

The Planning Board will review the project and determine whether it would affect the environment. Pending Planning Board approval, construction would begin late this fall or early next spring and be completed in late 2017, said Charles E. Hayes, a system spokesman.
