Fireworks may have sparked 1 of 2 overnight fires in Buffalo

A vacant home near Clinton and Smith streets sustained $40,000 in damage from a fire early Monday.

The blaze at 20 Montgomery St., just south of Clinton and east of Smith, was reported at 4:17 a.m., according to the Buffalo Fire Department alarm office.

The cause is under investigation, but officials said it may have been sparked by fireworks.

Two nearby buildings sustained exposure damage – a detached garage at 24 Montgomery and a house at 30 Montgomery. Damage at each was pegged at $5,000.

About an hour earlier, a 2½-story, multi-family home sustained $8,000 in damage in a fire that started on the exterior of the building, the alarm office said.

The blaze at 325 Millicent Ave., west of Eggert Road and just north of the Kensington Expressway, was reported at 3:11 a.m. Its cause also is under investigation.
