MILLER, Caroline Anne (Brown)
MILLER - Caroline Anne (nee Brown)
Passed away at her home in Berkeley, CA on June 24, 2016. She was 93 years old. Mrs. Miller was born at Children's Hospital in Buffalo on April 6, 1923 to C. Merrill Brown and his wife, Natalie Elder Brown. Mrs. Miller graduated from the University of Buffalo, where her father was a Professor of Chemistry, before moving to Berkeley to attend graduate school in Music at the University of California, Berkeley. She eventually settled in Berkeley and traded a promising career in musicology for the often thankless but sublime vocation of motherhood. She never once expressed any regrets for her choice and over the years proved herself to be a tireless and devoted mother to four children and faithful companion to her husband of 58 years, Dr. David Miller, also of Berkeley. Although a Berkeley resident for many years, Mrs. Miller retained a fierce loyalty to her native Buffalo and it would irk her when the city of her birth was referred to as Buffalo, New York. She was proud of Buffalo's architectural heritage and in her last years was fond of recalling her childhood in Williamsville and her wide network of family and friends there. Mrs. Miller had a lifelong passion for baseball, the legacy of her father who had been captain of the Williams College baseball team, and for 18th and 19th Century music and Opera as well. Her knowledge of these fields was encyclopedic and Mozart's The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflote) was forever a favorite. She loved animals especially cats and she would always bring a good cat story to your attention. She was very fond of her parents and most appreciative of her older sister, Janet, who passed away, also at the age of 93, in 2013. She will be dearly missed by her four children, Sally, Sam, Becky and Susie, by her three grandchildren, Megan, Laura and Amy, and by her devoted husband David, her NY Times crossword puzzle friend and foe. And not least by Molly, the family cat.
