Now that Steven Stamkos’ situation is settled, the most interesting free agent I’ll be watching for on Friday is Milan Lucic.
Best known in these parts for plummeting Ryan Miller, Lucic is a former Stanley Cup winner in Boston who seemed pretty set in Los Angeles and wanted to stay. It wasn’t possible.
The Kings have cap issues. Lucic made $6.5 million last year and he was the odd man out.
The favorite for Lucic is a Boston reunion in Edmonton with Boston GM Peter Chiarelli. Lucic toured Rogers Place, Edmonton’s new arena, and would be a great addition. Lucic is averaging 24 goals, 56 points and 101 penalty minutes per season the last five full years.
But this is hardly a lock. Lucic has reportedly ruled out his hometown of Vancouver while Montreal and perhaps a couple others are still alive. What about the Sabres? No thanks. That’s one move the fanbase couldn’t take.
