Past two free agency periods have been weak for Sabres

July 1 can be a day of fireworks. As the Sabres have seen, it can also be a dud.

Buffalo was hardly a free-agent destination during Tim Murray's first two cracks at July 1. Expectations were low, and the results matched them. Aside from captain Brian Gionta, little has worked out.

Here's a look at the Sabres' unrestricted free agent signings since Murray took over:

2014

Brian Gionta

Matt Moulson

Cody McCormick

Andrej Meszaros

Andre Benoit

Tyson Strachan

Zac Dalpe

2015

Cody Franson

Cal O'Reilly

Carlo Colaiacovo

Jason Akeson

Matt Donovan

Bobby Sanguinetti

Buffalo will head into Friday's opening of free agency hoping for better luck in improving its team.

"We do need to add, whether through a trade or free agency," Murray said. "We will add something, but I don't see any critical date or position. We'll find a way to get better, for sure."
