LOCKPORT – A man jumped to his death about 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Erie Canal locks in Lockport.
Police Chief Michael F. Niethe said the man jumped from the Pine Street Bridge over the locks, near the canal. Instead, he landed on the stone beside the locks, and was pronounced dead at the scene, Niethe said.
Shane Mahar, spokesman for the state Canal Corp., said Locks 34 and 35 were closed for almost an hour as a result of the incident, at the request of police. They reopened at 9:55 a.m.
