Report: Stamkos decides to stay in Tampa Bay

The dream of Steven Stamkos landing in Buffalo has died.

Stamkos has decided to stay in Tampa Bay, according to TSN, depriving the NHL of a crazed opening to free agency Friday. His decision has also deprived the Sabres of landing of the two best scorers in the world.

Buffalo had been poised to make a big offer to Stamkos, the 26-year-old who has 312 goals and 562 points in 569 NHL games.

Coach Dan Bylsma acknowledged over the weekend he has been drawing up dream line combinations featuring Stamkos.

The departure of Stamkos from the free-agent market leaves Kyle Okposo as the No. 1 player available.
