The United States Environmental Protection Agency recognized two Niagara University employees, Tom Lowe and William Boeck, as New York Environmental Champions during an event held recently at the LaSalle Vineyard Community Garden in Niagara Falls. Lowe is director of ReNU Niagara and Boeck is professor emeritus. They were honored for their dedication to protecting the public’s health and the environment. Also receiving the award was Joseph Gardella Jr., professor of chemistry at the University at Buffalo, and Sherri “Sam” Mason, an associate professor of chemistry at SUNY Fredonia. A total of 28 individuals and organizations from across the state were recognized this spring.

Daemen College was recognized as one of the safest colleges in New York in a new statewide list released by backgroundchecks.org. Over the past three years, Daemen has taken several measures to bolster campus safety, including enhanced training for officers, additional security cameras, and a vehicle to aid in response time. According to backgroundchecks.org, the 2016 Safest Colleges in New York list was compiled based on U.S. Department of Education reports, natural language analysis, social media sentiment analysis and their own research.
AT&T, WNY STEM Hub, SUNY Buffalo State and the Girl Scouts of Western New York have partnered to create a regional coding program exclusively for girls, It’s Your World! Develop It!, powered by AT&T, to encourage more women to enter the field of technology, specifically coding, an industry that is primarily male-dominant. The program will provide 40 girls from local urban middle and high schools an opportunity to gain coding skills and experiences over the next five months and engage them in science, technology, engineering and math career paths. Participants will learn computer coding basics and will continue throughout 2016, taking part in education programing after school and on weekends.
