Olean to honor its first African-American firefighter

OLEAN – Olean will pay tribute to its first African-American firefighter, Herbert V. Elmore, at a plaque dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Olean Central Fire Station on North Union Street. The plaque will be installed at the Fire Training Center in Gargoyle Park, which is dedicated to Elmore.

Elmore joined the Olean Fire Department in 1964 and was disabled by an injury in 1974. He continued to be active in fundraising for the Professional Firefighters Association until his death in 1994. Arrangements for the tribute were led by Revitalizing Olean, a Facebook group founded by Kathy Paciorkowski, which raised funds to have the plaque made.
