Clara Guerrero, who left her native Colombia to some to the U.S. and bowl for Wichita State University more than a decade a guy, won her first major title on the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour Sunday when she defeated Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, 199-175, in the title match of the Go Bowling Players championship at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay, Wis.
Johnson earned the final spot in the stepladder finals on Saturday while Guerrero had to defeat Stefanie Johnson (237-199) and Shannon O’Keefe (226-225) to get to the title match.
Guerrero, 34, earned $20,000 for the victory. Liz collected $10,000, pushing her season’s earning to $30,200 after nine stops on the PWBA Tour.
Guerrero, the No. 3 seed, edged O’Keefe by sparing in the 10th and filling with a strike. She had only one strike in nine frames in the final, but converted all her spares including a 1-2-7-10. Liz had open frames in the third and sixth.
Needing a mark and six pins in the final frame to close out the match Guerrero delivered two strikes.
