Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga rolled through the second block of match play with a 7-1 record Saturday and captured the top spot for Sunday’s stepladder finals for the Professional Women’s Bowlers Association Players Championship at the Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay, Wis. The finals will be televised live at noon on the CBS Sports Network.
Johnson averaged 239.38 in the second match play block. She bowled a 179 in her only loss to Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas, but came back for a 278 in her next match, a victory over Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., (278-193).
She was third after 12 games of qualifying on Friday totaling 2,733 pins (227.75). She went 4-4 matches on Saturday morning before she took charge in the afternoon.
Shannon O’Keefe of O’Fallon, Ill. qualified second with a 9-6-1 record and 6,502 grand total. Clara Guerrero of Pflugerville, Texas was next (9-7, 6,436) and Stefanie Johnson fourth (9-7, 6,402).
Johnson will be seeking her second title in the eighth stop on the PWBA Tour. She won the Las Vegas Open, the first stop on the tour, and was third in Lincoln, Neb. So far she has collected $20,200 on the Tour.
