Since I departed ESPN five years ago for the chance to do more meaningful journalism in a place I hold dear, The Buffalo News has been quite good to me.
My bosses provide the time, resources and trust to write stories that go deeper than, oh, let’s mention my riveting “Who will be better? Chad Henne or Mark Sanchez?” blog posts.
I want to mention one story in particular: the Patrick Kane rape investigation.
The subject was incredibly delicate and often bizarre to report on, but I was blessed to ride along with New York journalism legends Dan Herbeck and Lou Michel. We fielded criticism, some days for being too soft on Kane, some days for being too soft on the accuser. That means we probably covered it correctly.
The Associated Press Sports Editors awarded us first place in breaking news for our Kane coverage. On Saturday night in Charlotte, I was given the plaque to bring back to Buffalo.
My name is on it, but the credit goes to Dan and Lou, and to The Buffalo News for letting their reporters do quality work. Thank you for letting me be a part of it.
