Deputies seize $75,000 in fireworks from Buffalo storage units

A Buffalo man was storing illegal fireworks valued at $75,000 in self-storage units, Buffalo police and Erie County Sheriff’s

deputies reported.

The deputies decribed it as the largest single seizure of fireworks by the agency.

Deputies and police raided units at Spare Room Self Storage, 1545 William St., on Wednesday morning and found several dozen boxes of various types of fireworks and aerial-display devices in two separate units, they reported. Several partially opened and empty boxes were also found.

Fred Punturiero, 55, was charged with illegal storage of explosives and unlawfully selling fireworks. The investigation began from an anonymous tip, authorities said.

Investigators believe most of the inventory originated in Pennsylvania. The fireworks will be disposed of at an undisclosed location later this summer.
