Three teachers retiring this year from Casey Middle School in the Williamsville Central School District got a sendoff video from their colleagues that also pays homage to Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”
Led by Math specialist and resident videographer Harry O’Malley, family and friends got together surreptitiously over the past month to film the tribute.
“We really wanted it to be really personal and family-oriented,” O’Malley said of the video, which was shot with an iPhone 6. “We wanted to go to their place of work and get intimate.”
After playing at the retirement party last week for technology teacher Russell C. Christopher, Guidance Counselor Mary Jane Szydlowski and Math Teacher Marlana K Rice, the video has been played more than 40,000 times.
Featured players include Maria, Mike and Don, Christopher’s wife, son and friend; Deborah, Eric, Eric and Michelle, Rice’s hair dresser, student, son and minister, and Frank, Morgan, and David, Szydlowski’s husband, son and chiropractor. There also are appearances by several teachers and assistant principal Peter Dobmeier.
O’Malley said he shot the scene underneath the Skyway the day before the retirement party, and videoed the final person the morning of the party.
O’Malley, who did a stint at the New York Film Academy, started making videos for the annual school talent show about four years ago. He started out small, and this year produced a 21-minute opus.
“It’s kind of gotten out of control in a good way,” he said.
