10-year-old’s hanging death was accident, not suicide, police say

A 10-year-old Lackawanna boy did not intentionally hang himself earlier this week, despite rumors that he took his own life because he was bullied at school, police said Wednesday.

A police investigation determined the youngster was fooling around with a belt he had placed around his neck while on the top bunk of a bunk bed in his family’s home. He then accidentally slipped and the belt caught on the bed frame, according to Lackawanna Police Capt. Joseph E. Leo.

“This boy was not distraught in any manner. He wasn’t bullied to the point where he would try and kill himself. This is just a tragic accident that took place Monday afternoon,” Leo said. “People are assuming information being posted on social media is right and it is not.”
