Two children injured in crash when mother falls asleep at wheel

ROYALTON – Two children were transported by Mercy Flight to Women and Children’s Hospital following a car crash just after 9 a.m. Monday on Rochester Road.

The driver, their mother, Amanda L. Kamae , 27, told Niagara County sheriff’s deputies that she briefly fell asleep when the car veered off the road.

The Volkswagen Passat was traveling westbound when it left the road, investigators said. When the car veered off the road it struck a culvert pipe and then overturned an undetermined amount of times before coming to rest in a front yard at 8453 Rochester Road.

A 6-year-old boy in the car sustained injuries to the neck, chest and lower abdomen. A 1-year-old girl received contusions to her head. Their mother was taken to Medina Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries to her chest and abdomen. The extent of the injuries are unknown at this time.

Charges were pending.
