Jio Meier, who had never hit more than seven homers in eight minor league seasons, blasted his second in four days Sunday - a two-run shot in the top of the 10th inning to give the Buffalo Bisons a 5-3 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pa.
Meier, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Alexi Casilla in the fourth inning and struck out, came through in the 10th with two outs against Michael Mariot. He also homered in Buffalo’s 5-4 loss in the series opener Friday.
After a 2-2 split in Allentown, the Bisons come home to begin a four-game set against the Louisville Bats at Coca-Cola Field Monday night (7:05 p.m., Radio 1520 AM).
Early energy: Andy Burns hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the Herd the early lead.
Bisons tie it: Casey Kotchman led off for Buffalo in the seventh inning with a single and scored the tying run (3-3) as A.J. Jimenez hit into a double play.
No decision: International League earned run average leader Wade LeBlanc allowed three earned runs and a season-high 10 hits but was not involved in the decision. His ERA climbed to 1.71. Aaron Loup (2-0) picked up the win with one scoreless inning. Dustin Antolin pitched the 10th for the save.
Careless on the bases: The IronPigs stranded eight runners and had three others cut down on the bases - two were caught stealing, and Brock Stassi was thrown out by Domonic Brown trying to go from first to third on a single by Cedric Hunter in the fifth inning.
Heave-ho: Stassi and Lehigh Valley manager Dave Brundage were ejected by home plate umpire Roberto Ortiz after Stassi was called out on strikes in the ninth inning.
Transactions: The Bisons placed outfielder Dalton Pompey on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion and took right-hand reliever Bobby Korecky and left-hander Patrick McCoy off the list. McCoy was then traded to the Colorado Rockies. Pompey was injured when he ran into the outfield wall while catching a foul ball in Saturday’s day game.
Monday’s probables: Right-hander Roberto Hernandez (3-2, 4.44) will start for the Bisons against righty Jon Moscot (2-3, 6.58) of the Bats in the series opener.
