Applicants sought for Cheektowaga Youth Citizens Police Academy

High school students considering a career in law enforcement may apply to the town Police Department’s Youth Citizens Police Academy.

Students will be introduced to the various functions of the Police Department and learn the minimum qualifications, training requirements and daily responsibilities of other county, state and federal law enforcement agencies through guest speakers and tours of their facilities.

Students will view pictures and video of crime and accident scenes; have the opportunity to take the physical fitness test required for police officers; can be exposed to pepper spray; and will take part in the Firearms Training Simulator and shoot the Cheektowaga Police standard issued handgun.

In addition to the regular scheduled sessions, students will ride with an officer for an 8-hour ride-along and participate in a courtroom observation.

Parental consent is required and all applicants must successfully complete a background investigation and interview.

The three-week academy will be held from 9 a.m. until noon July 18 through Aug. 5 at the Police Department, 3223 Union Road. A graduation ceremony is planned for Aug. 8.
