VOGT, Donald Lyle

VOGT - Donald Lyle Of Orcas Island, WA died peacefully on June 7, 2016. Born in Buffalo, NY on September 10, 1933 to Thelma Burch Tyrrell and Lyle Vogt. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carolyn J. O'Day. He is preceded in death by his brother Robert Vogt; and survived by his sister, Linda McCarville (Paul). He is survived by his children: Dennis (Grace), David, Dawn Traina (James), Diane Tabone (Thomas); and stepchildren: Julia O'Day, Janine (O'Day, Hageman) Smith (Eric), and Jinnette O'Day. He was loved by grandchildren: Michael, Joshua, Justin, Ashley, Jay, Jordan, Barbara and Alvin; and seven great-grandchildren. Donald served in the United States Navy as a Sonar Specialist in various parts of the world; and was a Korean Era Atomic Veteran. Donald was New York State Police Officer for 23 years; and was the Chief Underwater Rescue Diver in Western New York. After retirement from the New York State Police, he became the first Director of Security for Genesee Community College and attained an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Donald moved to Oregon in 1982, where he worked for the National Parks Services as a Park Ranger, and the National Forest Services as a Firefighter. Donald also worked for American Airlines, Horizon Airlines and was Maintenance Supervisor for the Kelso International Airport after he moved to Longview, WA. Donald was a private pilot, enjoyed skydiving and was a motorcycle enthusiast. He also performed in a number of productions for a local community theater group, enjoyed international travel, photography and was a sports enthusiast. A celebration of his life will be held from Noon to 2:00 PM on Sunday August 14, 2016 at Lester H. Wedekindt Funeral Home, 3290 Delaware Ave., Kenmore, NY 14217.
