Bisons fall to IronPigs in 11 innings

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Buffalo Bisons couldn’t use a lack of rest as an excuse for their 5-4 loss to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Friday night.

The Bisons had an off day on Thursday, and had won three of their previous four games. It took 11 innings, but the Herd went down to defeat before 10,100 at Coca-Cola Park. Cedric Hunter’s double drove in Cam Perkins all the way from first base with the decisive run.

The loss went to Chad Jenkins (3-4), who came on in relief to start the 11th. Luis Garcia worked a scoreless top of the 11th with two strikeouts to pick up the win.

Buffalo couldn’t hold a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning. Tony Sanchez and Jio Mier both went 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. On the mound, Ben Rowan threw three scoreless innings of relief to give the Bisons a few chances to win.

Big nights at home: Hunter was the only player to have three hits in the game, as he lifted his average to .308. Perkins scored two runs and was 2 for 5.

Tight and tense: Neither side could score until the 11th after the IronPigs tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Starters’ report: Buffalo’s Chris Leroux gave up four runs in 5.2 innings of work. Ben Lively of Lehigh Valley, who had been pitching well, allowed four runs in 7.1 innings.

Back in town: Pitcher Scott Diamond has returned to the Bisons’ roster. He was designated for assignment earlier in the week. Diamond appeared in one game during his recall to Toronto, allowing three runs in one inning of work. That was his first bit of work in the major leagues since 2013.

Meanwhile, Colt Hynes, a left-handed pitcher, has been called up from Double-A New Hampshire. Catcher Luis Hurtado has been placed on the disabled list.

Saturday’s games: It’s an odd split-doubleheader for the Bisons and IronPigs. Drew Hutchison (3-3, 3.12) will go for the Herd in the 12:05 p.m. game against James Russell (1-2, 3.77). Then at 6:35 p.m., a pitcher to be announced for Buffalo will face Severino Gonzalez (0-1, 3.51). Both games will be broadcast on Radio 1520 AM.
