Amherst park’s playground equipment destroyed in fire

Amherst police are looking for the public’s help in their investigation of a fire Saturday that destroyed more than $50,000 worth of playground equipment at Paradise Park on Paradise Road.

East Amherst volunteer firefighters extinguished the fire, which was reported at 3:24 p.m. The equipment, a large prefabricated unit including swings, steps and a jungle gym, was full engulfed in flames when they arrived.

“It’s under investigation as a potential arson fire,” said Scott Wehrlin, first assistant chief. However, he said it’s also possible that wood chips around the unit might have caught fire in the sunshine, similar to a mulch fire.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Amherst police at 689-1311.
