April 28, 1927 – June 15, 2016

Jerome A. Noworyta, who taught in the Lackawanna School District for 35 years, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. He was 89.

Born the youngest of nine children in Lackawanna, he graduated from Lackawanna High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Fredonia State Teachers College.

Mr. Noworyta always wore a suit and tie while he taught seventh-grade English, remedial English and math.

He helped develop the Teacher Corps and Peace Corps programs in Lackawanna for young educators who were going to teach in the Middle East in the 1970s. Afterward, he kept in touch with the teachers, who sent him letters from around the world.

He enjoyed making family vacations educational for his children.

The family moved to Hamburg in the early 1970s.

He enjoyed fishing, bowling and BLTs and was a member of the West Seneca Senior Center. He was proud to have known Father Nelson Baker.

He and his first wife, the former Shirley Perison, were married 44 years and had six children. She died in 1993.

Survivors include his second wife: the former Joanne Burley, whom he married in 2002; three sons: Jerome Q., Timothy and Steven; two daughters: Betsy Irwin and Annette Accordino; and almost 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Victory Basilica, 767 Ridge Road, Lackawanna.
