Letter: Save veterans memorial in Cattaraugus County

Save veterans memorial in Cattaraugus County

In the pretty town of Little Valley, by the Cattaraugus County Courthouse, is a small two-story building. It is over 100 years old and remains standing proudly, though vacant for over a decade. A large plaque above the entrance states, “To the memory of its soldiers and sailors in the War of the Great Rebellion this building is erected by Cattaraugus County.”

In 2013, the Legislature voted it to be demolished with a $125,000 casino fund. A flood of protests followed and the Citizens Advocating Memorial Preservation (CAMP) was established to save this historic gem. A brief history and pictures are available at cattcomemorial.com. The interesting design of an octagon room with two wings and beautiful tile floor above a basement was a tribute to the fallen boys and men of the 1860s.

County legislators soon will have to make a difficult decision to save or demolish it. Today at 11 a.m., we will again hold a brief service at the building with re-enactors, music, flags and laying of a wreath. Public honoring of veterans from the Civil War to the present will be held. Join us in Little Valley to remember those who left their families, farms and businesses to serve.
