WILSON – The 44th annual Wilson Historical Society Memorial Day Fair is on tap from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday on the museum grounds, 645 Lake St. The American Legion is planning a special Memorial Day flag-raising ceremony at noon as part of the event.
The Super Flea Market, with more than 250 vendors, opens the long-running event. The day also will feature free entertainment by the Bar-Room Buzzards. The Antique Car Museum will be open, with a special section for antique and collectible cars on the grounds, featuring the awarding of dash plaques.
Pony rides, an old favorite, return, and a petting zoo will be featured.
“This is just a little added incentive for families to enjoy a country fair,” said Kyle Andrews, president of the Historical Society.
The gathering is also known for its fair-style food, and Chiavetta’s chicken barbecue will be available from 10:30 a.m. until it’s gone. Other favorites will be available, including hot dogs and hamburgers, cotton candy, homemade pies, sno-cones, coffee and doughnuts, soft drinks and bottled water.
The Museum Depot will be open, with exhibits and displays. Festivalgoers also will be able to visit the Caboose, Fittro Shop, one-room Schoolhouse and Tugwell Cabin.
Parking is free at the museum, which gets crowded. Free shuttle bus transportation is recommended from Town Hall and Wilson High School.
The Historical Society is a nonprofit, volunteer organization. The fair is the group’s major fundraiser for the year, according to Andrews.
“This fundraiser helps us keep our grounds open and ready for use by the public,” he said. “One of our major projects right now is upgrading and replacing the furnaces in the main railroad depot, which was built at the turn of the last century. It’s a large building and has three furnaces and we’d like to reduce that to two high-efficiency furnaces. That’s our signature building.”
Andrews said the group is always looking for new members and volunteers. The society meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the museum. For more information, contact the Wilson Town Clerk’s Office at 751-6704.
