Respect is a two-way street for bicyclists and motorists
I must defend Rod Watson’s insightful column on bicycling in Buffalo. Judging by the popularity of Slow Roll, there are many riders, but I doubt that many more than 1 percent of them ride to work.
Bicyclists need and deserve respect from motorists, but that should be returned. Running red lights, maneuvering in and around cars stopped in traffic and minimal reflectors are often problems. Richmond Avenue after dark is a nightmare, with many riders in dark clothing and with no lights on their bicycles.
Bikes and cars can safely coexist, but it requires attention and consideration from both sides. It’s not a contest.
