Hypocrisy abounds in abortion debate
The governor of Oklahoma recently vetoed a measure passed by that state legislature criminalizing abortion. Since its inception in 1965, Medicaid, by giving poor women access to care, has improved the health and well-being of our most vulnerable people. With the Affordable Care Act, states could expand their Medicaid plans to cover more low-income people. Nineteen states have opted out of Medicaid expansion, including Oklahoma. Most of these states are in the old Confederacy and claim opposition for religious reasons.
An infant has a much better chance of survival if his mother has prenatal visits, if the child has immunizations, food, clothing, etc. It is the ultimate hypocrisy to tell a newborn, “we got you out, kid, you’re on your own now, have a good life!”
In the story of the Good Samaritan, a clergyman wraps his self-righteous robes about him, ignoring an injured, robbed journeyman. It is left to a compassionate stranger to tend the needy. We need more Samaritans!
