SUNY Buffalo State’s Benjamin Ezike is a national champion in the triple jump for the second time in less than three months.
The junior transfer from Rhode Island leaped 50-11.4 Saturday to win the NCAA Division III outdoor title at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. He won the indoor title in March.
Ezike, a junior transfer from Rhode Island and former a former Atlantic 10 Conference long jump champion, registered the winning mark on his very first jump, just as he did in taking the Division III indoor championship.
Meanwhile, University at Buffalo shot putters Megan Patterson and Ryan Cribbin failed to finish in the top 12 and did not advance out of the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville. Patterson finished 18th among in the women’s event with her throw of 51 feet, 3 inches. Cribbin threw 53-8 3/4 on his first attempt and then fouled twice.
Jim Brnik (West Seneca East) doubled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as No. 3-ranked Niagara County Community College (44-5) rallied to defeat No. 1 Rowan Gloucester (39-14) of New Jersey, 3-1, in the first round of the NJCAA Division III World Series in Kinston, N.C.
NCCC’s Christian Young (Frontier) struck out 11 and allowed no earned runs in eight innings. Alex Kubera (Dunkirk) struck out two batters in the ninth for the save.
NCCC tied the game when Joe Milkowski scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad Wroblewski (Lockport). Joe Milkowski (St. Francis) singled to drive in a run in the ninth.
NCCC plays the second round of the double-elimination tournament on Sunday night against Northern Essex (Mass.).
